Synopsis
Explore 3D printing with this free introductory class for beginners. Emerging Technologies Librarian Genevieve Girvan will talk about how 3D printers work, what kinds of projects can be made with 3D printers, and how to get started with designing your own 3D files to print.
This workshop will include an introduction to Autodesk Tinkercad, a free web-based 3D modeling software. Anyone who would like to get a headstart can create a free account. We will go through the beginner tutorials for using 3D modeling software as a group during the workshop.
Anyone who would like to bring their own laptop is welcome to do so, but the library does have a set of Windows gaming laptops that can be used by class participants. Autodesk Tinkercad requires a graphics card that supports webGL. WebGL enables working in 3D in the browser. If you are not sure that your graphics card supports webGL, visit this page to see if you see a spinning cube: https://get.webgl.org/. For more information about system requirements for Tinkercad, please see Tinkercad's Browser, Platform, and Hardware Requirements.
Speaker
Genevieve Girvan is Westfield Memorial Library's Emerging Tech Librarian. She's been helping us organize our events at the library and this group would not be where it is without her. We're very lucky to have her host an event for us!
